Training course on Vietnamese and international practices and procedures in marine waste assessment and monitoring

On the morning of July 27, 2022, the Center for Marine Life Conservation and Community Development (MCD) cooperated with the Institute of Sea and Island Studies (VISI), the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (VASI) and the Department of Marine and Island Affairs (VASI). Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Dinh province opened the “Training course on Vietnamese and international practices and procedures in marine waste assessment and monitoring”.

The training course took place over 3 days, from July 27 to 29, 2022, with 1 day of theoretical training and 2 days of fieldwork at Nam Dinh riverside and coastal locations.

The training course was organized with the participation of nearly 100 in a hybrid manner in Nam Dinh in person and online via Zoom platform, and nearly 30 participants participated in practical sessions in the field. The delegates are leaders and staff of the Institute of Sea and Island Research; representatives of units under the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; MCD Center, national and international experts; lecturers and researchers from universities, research institutes, international organizations, NGOs and environmental projects in Vietnam; Delegates from Nam Dinh include: Leaders and officials of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, representatives of the Departments of Natural Resources and Environment of the districts in the province and the Nam Dinh city, Xuan Thuy National Park Management Board; and media press.

The training course is part of the project “Supporting the implementation of initiatives to reduce ocean plastic waste in Vietnam” conducted by the MCD Center with funding and technical advice from Conservation Organization. World Ocean. The project aims to promote cooperation between stakeholders and connect technical support to enhance the effectiveness of efforts to reduce ocean plastic waste in Vietnam, contributing to support the implementation of the National Action Plan on IWRM by 2020. 2030.

Speaking at the training course, Ms. Ho Thi Yen Thu – Permanent Deputy Director of MCD said: “The MCD Center always strives to connect resources from donors and stakeholders, and partners at all levels. and the community to build and implement projects on marine environmental protection and sustainable development in coastal areas of Vietnam. In which, the training of knowledge and skills for officials of agencies, organizations and mass organizations is always focused on by MCD in order to contribute to creating a stronger scientific and technical capacity foundation for the protection of the marine environment in general. and ocean plastic waste management in particular. With that in mind, today MCD is very pleased to cooperate with VISI and Nam Dinh Department of Natural Resources and Environment to organize the activity “Training on Vietnamese and international methods, processes and practices in marine waste assessment and monitoring.  We would like to thank domestic and international experts, colleagues from Ocean Conservancy OC for always accompanying MCD, VISI and Nam Dinh during the implementation of project activities.

A representative of the Institute for Sea and Island Research shared: “As a marine science and technology research unit, we aim to propose and develop strategies, mechanisms and policies for integrated management of natural resources and environmental protection. In the sea and islands, we are always proactive and active in cooperating with related parties, integrating internationally in solving pollution problems caused by plastic waste. We appreciate the opportunities to cooperate with MCD to carry out scientific and technical activities in general and activities on Ocean plastic waste management in particular. We hope that the participants in this training course will be equipped with information, knowledge and skills on a number of domestic and international methods, processes and practices on assessment and monitoring of plastic waste. in order to be able to better perform their duties, contributing to the implementation of the National Operational Plan on Ocean Plastic Waste Management to 2030”.

The course aims to support management agency representatives, research and educational institution representatives, and stakeholders at all levels by teaching national and international methods, protocols, and practices for the assessment and monitoring of marine plastic waste in marine and coastal areas. This knowledge-sharing will contribute to supporting policy-making and data-based interventions in the management of marine plastic waste and to successfully implement the Action Plan on Marine Plastic Waste Management until 2030 at provincial and national levels.
